How to Turn Your Pet Into a Pokemon Card — The Ultimate Custom Poke Card Guide
Imagine opening your wallet and pulling out a holographic trading card of your dog as a legendary creature. That is what a custom poke card is — and thousands of pet owners are already carrying one.
This guide walks through the whole process of turning your pet into a personalized pokemon card: choosing the photo, picking the material, writing the stats, and displaying the finished card. If you want the background on the format itself first, read what is a poke card.
Why Custom Pet Poke Cards Took Off
The trend exploded for one simple reason: pets are family, and almost every pet gift on the market is generic. A mug with a paw print is not a keepsake. A pokemon card custom made from your own dog's face is.
- Dog moms gift them to other pet parents — the recognition factor is instant
- Cat dads keep them on desks at work
- Families use them as memorial keepsakes for pets who have passed
- They are the default unique birthday gift for pet lovers
- They cost less than a framed portrait and take up less space
Step 1: Choose the Right Photo
Photo quality decides the final result more than anything else. Our design team retouches every image, but they cannot add detail that was never captured.
What makes a good pet photo
- High resolution — at least 1000px wide. A photo straight from a phone is fine; a screenshot of an Instagram story usually is not.
- Good lighting — natural window light beats flash and beats direct midday sun. Flash also causes eye-shine in dogs and cats.
- Face forward or slight angle — so their expression carries. Profile shots lose personality.
- Simple background — a plain wall or grass makes the portrait cut-out cleaner than a cluttered living room.
- Eyes visible and in focus — this is the single biggest difference between a good card and a great one.
Photographing a pet that will not sit still
Use burst mode, get down to their eye level, and have someone hold a treat just above the camera lens. Shoot near a window, never with flash. Ten seconds of burst gives you more usable frames than ten minutes of waiting.
Do not worry about perfection — our designers adjust and enhance every photo before printing, and will tell you before production if an image genuinely will not work.
Step 2: Pick Your Card Material
At YourPokeCards we print on three premium materials. None of them are paper.
| Material | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Metal | Everyday carry, wallets, posting overseas | Anodised aluminium. Will not bend, crease or water-damage. |
| Acrylic | Desks and shelves | Clear and glass-like. Shows fingerprints, so it is a display card. |
| Acrylic with hologram | Gifts, reveals, anything photographed | Rainbow shimmer under any direct light. The collector's option. |
If the card is a surprise gift that will be opened in front of people, choose holographic. If it is going in a wallet, choose metal.
Step 3: Personalize the Card Details
This is where a nice print becomes a keepsake.
Name
Your pet's real name is usually enough. Adding "EX" or "V" after it is a small touch that fans of the format appreciate.
HP
Most owners use a meaningful number rather than a random one — their pet's birthday, or their adoption day. HP 0312 for a 12 March gotcha day.
Element type
- Fire — the zoomies dog, the 3am chaos cat
- Water — calm, patient, unbothered by anything
- Grass — the one who eats plants and lies in the garden
- Electric — puppies, kittens, and anything under two years old
- Psychic — the cat who stares at nothing at 4am
- Fairy — small, fluffy, aggressively cute
Attack moves
The part everyone reads out loud. Be specific to your pet, not generic to the species:
- "Zoomies" — 90 damage. Triggers immediately after a bath.
- "Puppy Eyes" — 0 damage. Opponent surrenders food voluntarily.
- "Midnight Meow" — 60 damage. Only usable between 3am and 5am.
- "Silent Judgment" — no damage. Lowers trainer's self-esteem.
- "Sock Theft" — 30 damage. Item is never recovered.
Flavour text
One line at the bottom. The best ones are true: "Rescued from a car park in 2019. Has not stopped talking since."
Step 4: Add Premium Accessories
- Acrylic stand — minimal, desk-friendly, lets you swap cards
- Case slab — the graded-card look, sealed and shelf-worthy
- Acrylic block — the card embedded in solid acrylic, with real depth and weight

A digital proof is typically ready within 1–2 business days. Production and shipping follow your approval. Allow around three weeks for a dated occasion.

Yes — up to around four subjects on one card. The Dog & Cat Combo Card (YPC-54) is built for multi-pet homes.
My pet has passed away. Can you still make a card?
